On November 20th, the global 2013 Freeride World Tour held its inaugural press conference at one of Munich, Germany’s landmark retail sports stores called "Sporthaus Schuster.” While at this event, PrimaLoft® had a chance to sit down with Eva Walkner of Salzburg/Austria. As many of you know, Walkner is unquestionably one of the world’s best female Freeskiers and continues to gain massive popularity throughout Europe as part of Salewa’s sponsored team of athletes.

For 2012, Eva finished the 2012 Freeride World Tour with an overall second place finish in point standings.

Besides her passion for freeriding, Eva’s outdoor passions include rock climbing, longboarding, surfing, mountain biking, hiking in the mountains and music – and – with spending all of that time outdoors, she is a PrimaLoft® fan as well.
"My PrimaLoft® jacket is with me in the mountains every single day. When on an ascent it fits easily into my backpack due to its lightweight and compressibility, and on the summit it is super warm and windproof. Even on the descent it keeps me warm and dry.”

She is even using PrimaLoft®-insulated gloves from Zanier for the backcountry conditions that are prevalent in today’s freeskiing competitions.

This year’s tour has kicked off with major media attention. Representatives from the snowsports world and television outlets joined the FWT press conference stop in Munich to watch David Carlier, the European Communication Director of the Freeride World Tour present the FWT experience to the audience. After Munich’s conference, the Freeride World Tour press event circuit then moved on to Paris to promote the Freeride World Tour to legions of freeride followers in conjunction with a tour stop in legendary Chamonix, France.

We are looking forward to a successful Freeride World Tour 2013 and we’re crossing our fingers for Eva Walkner to do what she does best this year – shred.

Energy Prices Expected to Rise for U.S. Households this Winter

PrimaLoft provides simple tips for keeping warm inside and out

ALBANY, New York – (December 17, 2012) – From natural gas to heating oil, consumers can expect to see rising costs to ensure comfort this winter season according to a recent survey conducted by the U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration (http://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.cfm?id=8310). The survey indicates U.S. households will spend more to heat their homes this winter.

According to the U.S. Energy Department's study, heating bills will rise 20 percent for heating oil customers, 15 percent for natural gas customers, 13 percent for propane customers and 5 percent for electricity customers. In addition to being the world’s highest performing synthetic insulation for outerwear, PrimaLoft® is also known as The Luxury Down Alternative®, in the home and bedding industries due to its luxurious feel, unrivaled comfort and hypoallergenic properties. PrimaLoft® is the fill of choice for comforters, blankets, pillows, mattress pads, and other premium bedding products used by the world’s finest brands and luxury hotels. PrimaLoft® bedding can be found in the finest hotels, specialty stores, catalogues, and upscale department stores.

“Whether consumers are out on the slopes, lounging around their house, or sleeping comfortably in bed, PrimaLoft® performance insulations keep millions of users warm, dry and comfortable all winter long,” stated Eileen Berner, Director of Sales & Marketing, PrimaLoft®.

PrimaLoft®’s proprietary blend of ultra-fine microfibers are designed to keep the body warm, dry and comfortable in any condition. PrimaLoft® insulation's performance qualities make it the insulation choice for top outdoor brands in outerwear, gloves, socks, boots and sleeping bags.

As an alternative to turning up the thermostat, PrimaLoft® offers a few simple tips for those who want to remain warm without spending more:

• Instead of turning up the heat when you’re inside the house, keep your core and extremities insulated and you’ll retain more body heat. Layer on a PrimaLoft® insulated vest, like the Patagonia Nano Puff, to keep your core warm. Add soft and cozy Fox River socks made with PrimaLoft® Yarn to keep your feet toasty while you lounge around the house or run errands.

• Build a crackling fire, and snuggle up with a lofty and luxurious PrimaLoft® comforter, from Macy’s Hotel Collection. It’s another simple way to stay warm without cranking the thermostat.

• Keep moving! The more you move around, whether exercising outside or cleaning the house inside, the warmer you will be! Moving keeps your body temp raised, keeps energy levels up and burns calories.

Life On The Sea: A Look into Alaskan Deep Sea Fishing

We often recieve testimonials from folks who have tried PrimaLoft® and experienced its performance for the first time, but this testimonial was so good that we just had to share...

Kyle Christenson is an action sports and adventure photographer based in Bozeman, MT (all photos in this post are his own) who had an incredible experience working on a Deep Sea Fishing boat in Bristol Bay, Alaska during 2011. With over-water storms sending waves crashing into the relatively small fishing boat, it is hard to imagine undertaking such a voyage without the proper gear. Fortunately, Kyle came equipped.

1. What piece of gear were you wearing during your work in the Bering Sea?

A: A Patagonia Men's Nano Puff® Hoody [insulated with PrimaLoft® ONE]

2.	Tell us about your commercial fishing experience, and what your job entails.

A: My experiences generally relate to gill net fishing in Bristol Bay, Alaska. Like all fisheries, there are a set of rules that maintain the ecosystem. These rules, set by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, specify the type of fishing equipment used and time periods allowed for fishing, all of which are heavily enforced by the United States Coast Guard.

In Bristol Bay, we fish on boats that don’t exceed 32 feet with a group of four fisherman, with fishing equipment and provisions to last a month. The time period that we are allowed to catch fish can vary each day depending on the amount of fish that make it into each river to spawn. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game closely monitor optimal spawning rates for the season. When there’s too many fish rushing into the rivers, they allow us to fish and as it slows they cut us off. We often fish two periods a day and each period takes up approximately 8 hours. This time is spent almost exclusively on the back deck of the boat in the cold, wet Alaskan environment.

As a deck hand, my primary job is to pick fish out of the net - the faster the better. The net comes up and over the stern of the boat as it’s wound onto a large hydraulic drum. In this process we must remove the fish from the net before the net is wound on the drum. The length of this process determines the amount of time your net is out of the water, directly impacting the amount of fish that it’s possible to catch and our time exposed in the direct elements.

3.	How would you rate PrimaLoft’s® effectiveness in this cold and wet environment at sea?

A: I was pleasantly surprised on PrimaLoft’s effectiveness through changing conditions. Its ability to insulate while wet is a pretty noteworthy characteristic for a fisherman. Despite our rubber rain gear, we always seem to be wet. While we’re picking fish out of the net we expend a lot of energy, heat up our non-breathable rubber rain gear and sweat. As the net goes back into the water, we slow down, wait for more fish, and begin to chill. The chilling process didn’t happen this year, PrimaLoft® helped me regulate my temperature when energy output was high, and kept insulating in its damp or wet state as our net soaked in the water. This was my first season with PrimaLoft® onboard, and it made all the difference in the world.

Beyond PrimaLoft’s most important test of staying warm while being wet, it also excelled at drying between shifts. The garment’s low profile minimized the bulk under the rain gear, lending to increased mobility and overall efficiency. I used the Patagonia Men's Nano Puff® Hoody almost every day, changing my base layers with the weather, but always putting PrimaLoft on top.

PrimaLoft® announces Your Greatest Adventure Sweepstakes Winner

Photo contest celebrates passion for outdoor adventure; winner to choose from three great U.S. adventures, courtesy of PrimaLoft®

ALBANY, New York (October 18, 2012) -- PrimaLoft®, the world leader in performance insulations and yarns, is proud to announce the winner of the Your Greatest Adventure Sweepstakes photo contest. Selected from numerous entries, Amanda Cram of Three Forks, Montana, has been named as the 2012 sweepstakes winner.

The Your Greatest Adventure Sweepstakes was developed by PrimaLoft® to offer individuals an opportunity to share their greatest adventures via photo and caption posted on the PrimaLoft® Facebook page. The contest began on July 26, 2012 and ran through October 10, 2012. During that time, entrants had the opportunity to campaign for votes among Facebook friends, and the ten photos that received the most votes became finalists to be judged by a panel of outdoor adventure experts.

Ms. Cram, an English and journalism high school teacher, is also an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing and skiing.

As the grand prize winner, Ms. Cram will select one of three incredible adventure packages, receiving roundtrip air travel and accommodations to her chosen adventure destination, and a gear prize pack powered by PrimaLoft®:

• Backpacking on the Appalachian Trail (100-Mile Wilderness, ME)
• An ice climbing experience in Ouray, CO
• A ski getaway in Jackson Hole, WY

In addition, Ms. Cram and her guest will also receive lift tickets, permits, rentals & guide fees (as applicable to prize selection) to complete their selected prize package. The complete package has an estimated value of $2,500.

Ms. Cram’s photo, entitled, “The moment when you forget how hard it was,” features her husband Kyle, holding their dog, Rooster, high up in the air to celebrate their summit of Hollow Top Mountain (Southwest Montana). The couple and their beloved pooch had camped overnight in a bowl at the base of the mountain and spontaneously celebrated the completion of their hike to the top of the mountain by raising their pup to the sky with joy.

“I’m very excited to have won this year’s sweepstakes,” said Amanda Cram, winner of PrimaLoft’s Your Greatest Adventure Sweepstakes. “It was a great way for my husband Kyle, our pup, Rooster, and I to share an exhilarating moment that expresses our love for the outdoors. We’re so pleased to have an opportunity to share our photo with others, and to have been a part of this fun contest.”

The winning photo was selected among ten finalists by a special panel of outdoor adventure experts, including:

• Diane Van Deren, The North Face sponsored ultra-runner
• Jason Hairston, KUIU founder and outdoor/hunting blogger
• Sheri and Randy Propster, Backpacker Magazine ‘Get Out More Tour’ ambassadors
• Carl Heilman, renowned photographer and Adirondack outdoorsman
• Mary Anne Potts, Editor, National Geographic Adventure

Judges were asked to select a photo that exemplifies passion for outdoor adventure.
Some comments from the judges about the 2012 winning photo include:

“The moment of joy captured in this photo encompasses the reality that it is truly the journey and not the destination,” said Backpacker’s Get Out More tour guides, Sheri and Randy Propster. “On great adventures, the hard work, the muscle aches and the blisters always seem to fade away when the overwhelming sense of accomplishment sets in. Having a loyal partner, or in this case, "a man's best friend" turns a great adventure into the Greatest…”

“I have always enjoyed the fact that I could have an adventure any time I liked, wherever I happened to be. Whether it was on a winter climb up a mountain or walking out my back door here in the Adirondacks,” said Carl Heilman, renowned photographer and Adirondack outdoorsman. “Adventure comes from the spirit of how a person approaches life and activities, not the location. I think that best speaks of the benefits of Primaloft® as well - to help you wherever you are in day to day life - not just on a Tibetan expedition. I enjoy a PrimaLoft® jacket just as much when I need to add a layer in the house, as I do when I'm photographing on a peak in the winter.”

The 2012 Your Greatest Adventure Sweepstakes was promoted to consumers through Facebook, Twitter, as well as via the Backpacker Get Out More Tour.

PrimaLoft® is featured worldwide in leading outdoor brands such as The North Face, Spyder, Black Diamond, Patagonia, L.L. Bean, and Outdoor Research as the performance insulation and yarn of choice for outerwear, sleeping bags, gloves, footwear, accessories and socks.
